Forza Horizon 5 Review: Initial Impressions

In early May, shortly after securing a Series S, I downloaded Forza Horizon 4 to give it a try. I had never played a Forza game before. My car-obsessed four-year-old saw me playing it, and it quickly became my most played game in May (and every month since) thanks to him wanting to watch me race. When E3 footage was released for Forza Horizon 5 in June, the game quickly jumped to my most anticipated game for 2021.

Forza Horizon 5 is everything I hoped it would be after seeing the footage earlier this year. From the opening sequence of driving down an active volcano in a 2021 Ford Bronco to cruising through the desert with the sun setting smashing cactus, there is something familiar yet new to the entire experience.

Welcome to Mexico!

While the game does a great job throwing you right into the action, it may be a bit jarring if you haven’t played Forza Horizon 4. It is an exciting introduction to the game and gets to the point right away. If you don’t enjoy the first 15 minutes of the game, you know this one is not for you.

The character creation process had some pleasant surprises added, including pronoun options and prosthetics. After establishing your “superstar” and choosing your first set of wheels, it is off to the races.

Or not.

I just started driving around aimlessly for an hour exploring. I suggest you do the same.

All of the things

There are so many things to do, and I would argue no correct order to do them. The new accolades system is robust and adds a lot of things to do. Earning accolade points unlocks new Horizon Adventure campaigns. It is a great way to progress the story and open areas in a way you want. Outposts for each racing series make for more fast travel locations and quicker access to tune your cars.

The ones present have no side effects and are thus unwilling to admit their mistakes, acknowledge their weaknesses canada generic viagra or ask for help. The usual activities begin to populate your map as you progress from Speed Traps to PR Stunts and Story activities. Also, boards. So many boards. I love all the activities and have primarily hunted Fast Travel Boards to reduce the credit cost to move around the map.

I decided to focus my time on the Baja / Cross Country circuit to unlock The Titan. One reason is that it is my kid’s favourite race. The second is because I love having a long race to farm skill points – and The Titan is a great place to start for farming skill points.

All of the Cars

Forza Horizon 5 is about cars and the love of cars. The variety, the customization, and the sheer number to collect are enough to be the game all on its own. The addition of the auction house and car gifting increases the ability to swap, sell, and complete your collection with the community’s help. I bought a second 2021 Ford Bronco off the auction house for 20k credits so the kid and I could each have one.

I applaud the addition of the auction house. I hope it isn’t abused.

Welcome Home, Jesse.

The Mexico of Forza Horizon 5 is stunning. The game itself is excellent for any ability level. The player has so much control over the experience they want. I have cherished every moment I have had with this game so far.

While I have only scratched the surface of what the game holds, it is already my Game of the Year. If you’re excited about Forza Horizon 5, you will not be disappointed. If you’ve never played a Forza game before, I highly recommend giving it a go on Xbox Game Pass when it releases on November 9th.
