London Hacking | Watch Dogs: Legion First Impressions

Disclosure: Today is launch day for Watch Dogs: Legion and, thanks to Ubisoft Canada, I was provided an early access review copy to explore and promote through my stream and social channels.

Watch Dogs: Legion, while a game I was curious about but not one I was necessarily hyped to play. The original never connected with me back in 2014, despite pre-ordering the digital deluxe version. I tried to get into the world but it never felt right. Because of this, I skipped the second release entirely. When a review copy showed up in my email, I took it as a sign of a fresh start with the franchise.

DedSec needs Me and You… and You

After the intro campaign, setting up the story, and Zero-Day, you’re immediately thrown into the world to do what you please. I decided to build up my team roster before diving into the story. I don’t recommend this approach. The first few missions are a great tutorial and will give you more of the tools you need to make a lot of the game easier when meeting potential DedSec members.

What I found surprising about my approach to the game was that it was allowed. Ubisoft Toronto made it possible to just go explore the world and figure it out on your own after only 40 minutes of gameplay. I loved driving around London, hacking people to see if they would be worth the effort, and moving on with their recruitment mission.

I only have a few hours a day to play games. However, I have found myself making time to sneak in “one more mission” which is not something I expected. This game is as difficult or simple as you want it to be, As someone with a slowing reaction time, the London of Watch Dogs: Legion, is very accessible and almost forgiving. I wasn’t brave enough to play with Permadeath On, but I don’t feel punished for playing the way I want.

A romp around The City

The London of Watch Dogs: Legion is great to explore and navigate. Using the Tube stations as fast travel means it is easy to complete missions efficiently without much downtime. I remember disliking the driving most in the original Watch Dogs. In Legion, when you do need to drive around, the controls are responsive and the destruction is hilarious. This game does not take itself seriously, and I appreciate the dark humor that comes from it.

Find new friends

With only 12 days until Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Watch Dogs: Legion is in an interesting place. After 7 hours of playtime, it feels like a game I will return to regularly for many months. It is also a game I plan to take slow and unlock over time. I know I will need to liberate burrows, find currency, and progress the story to unlock the entire game. However, recruitment is something I see myself coming back to doing well after completing the story. I have been finding a lot of enjoyment in the different missions (while repetitive) and collecting Londoners like they are Pokémon.

Finding the perfect member for a job with the right balance of tools is surprisingly fun. I want to be doing it right now and I think I will. Come find me in London.
