Access to ‘Halo Infinite’ provided to me by Microsoft/Xbox Canada for preview & review
Sometimes unexpected things happen. I have never considered myself a video game reviewer, yet for the last week, I’ve spent my time trying not to kill Master Chief in Halo Infinite repeatedly. Yes. I am writing a Halo Infinite Review. Someone pinch me.
The review is after the jump but, I want to preface with this: reviewing a video game is hard. It is even more challenging when your job is a stay-at-home parent. I did not get as much time with Halo Infinite as I wanted. My review is from the first five hours of the campaign.
Halo Infinite is damn fun
Halo Infinite grabs you from the opening moments and doesn’t let go. The hardest part for me was knowing I had to stop playing. I wanted to learn more. See more. Kill more Banished. Do ridiculous things with the arsenal of weapons. There is just so much to like.
It is all just fun.
While the story is serious and has many questions, the journey truly is what this game is about. Making the Halo experience open world and customizable in your approach makes the game something new in a familiar setting.
The Many Deaths of Master Chief
I died a lot in my time with the game. I mean – a lot. Maybe I am out of practice with FPS games. Perhaps I am not just that good anymore. Whatever the reason, every death was worth it. Each death was me doing something stupid and a teaching moment for the game.
But, it also never felt bad. The deaths were from missing a Banished drop point or not seeing a door open. I earned each one of my deaths. It was me being too careless. Rushing. I was not clearing a room properly. I never felt like the game was too hard. I was not playing right – and to me, that is rewarding gameplay.
Now, enjoy the show.
Becoming Master Chief
As always, the best part of Halo is being Master Chief. More than ever before, being Spartan-117 and its meaning something has never been greater. The Master Chief you build through upgrades and arsenal preferences is your own (sure, there will be cookie-cutter min/max builds, but, whatever) and you get to do play how you want.
And all games should have a Grappleshot.
Halo Infinite is a Master Chief story, and the connection you feel to the character and the world has never felt stronger. 20 years on and
